The recent economic discussion of artificial intelligence-- especially expert systems--is dominated by optimistic evaluations. Critical contributions like those of Weizenbaum and Dreyfus do not escape the context of computer sciences. Furthermore they suffer from topicality since they essentially concern the technology of the sixties. Therefore the factors are analyzed that critically affect the use of expert systems.
