Abstract:

Discusses the methodological and conceptual shortcomings of P. L. Ackerman et al.'s (same issue) metaanalysis on the association of working-memory capacity (WMC) with cognitive ability. It is assumed that Ackerman et al. underestimated the correlations because of problems with task selection, metaanalysis procedures, and insufficient correction for unwanted variance sources. Structural equation modeling is recommended for the assessment of relationship between latent variables and is applied in a data reanalysis. Higher correlations between WMC and general intelligence than those found by Ackerman et al. are reported. WMC is therefore interpreted as an explanatory construct for intellectual abilities, which predicts reasoning ability and general intelligence.
