Surface tension and stress in solids: The rigid-planes model

The physical origin of the difference between surface tension and stress at the surface of a crystal, in contrast to their equality at an interface between fluid phases, is discussed in terms of a simple model of rigid parallel planes with phenomenological bulk and surface energies. The relationship between this model and real crystals is also considered.
