Perspirocyclopropanated rotanes: cut-out from a carbon network with spirocyclopropane units?

Perspirocyclopropanated rotane I was prepd. from sequential cyclopropanation reactions beginning with bis(dispiroheptylidene) II. II underwent cyclopropanation with Et diazoacetate in the presence of [Rh2(OAc)2]2 catalyst to give III (X = CO2Et). By a 4 step synthesis III (X = CO2Et) is converted to III [X = N(NO)CONH2] which upon treatment of with NaOMe and bicyclopropylidene gave I in 14% yield.
