Charge transfer-complexes of octaethylferrocene.

The reaction of octaethylferrocene (I) with 7,7',8,8'-tetracyano-p-quinodimethane (TCNQ) gives a 1:1 charge-transfer complex [(C5Et4H)2Fe]+ [TCNQ]- (II). The crystal structure of II has been detd. at 110 K and shown to consist of one-dimensional D+A-D+... stacks. The reaction of I with 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7',8,8'-tetracyano-p-quinodimethane (TCNQ-F4) gives a 1:1 charge-transfer complex with dimeric anion, the crystal structure of which is also detd. at 103 K. The known charge-transfer complex of decaethylferrocene with TCNQ has independently been subjected to a crystal structure anal. at 110 K.
