Ethane, propane, and n-butane form layer structures in the solidstate,. By describing their mol. geometries as a rectangle, an irregular pentagon and an irregular hexagon, resp., it was shown that propane can not close-pack like its cogeners. The m. p. of propane is therefore lower than expected in the series.
