Abstract:

The oxidn. of metal sulfides (pyrite) by defined cultures of leaching bacteria (Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, Leptospirillum ferrooxidans) was quantified by microcalorimetry. The heat evolved generally correlated with the leaching rate and the theor. reaction energies. Bioleaching activities could be accurately measured in short-time expts. within 1 h.
