Cyclopentadienyl-alkali metal compds. are among the 1st organometallic compds. prepd. Their structures were well studied and generally show unsolvated or solvated polymer chains or solvated monomers. During the last few years there were some interesting developments in the structural chem. of this compd. class; structures of oligomeric species and anionic metallocene sandwich complexes are reported. This review, with 167 refs., discusses bonding in Cp-alkali metal compds. and summarizes selected structural data of all Cp-alkali metal compds. published up to Sept. 1997 including the authors' own unpublished results (the indenyl, fluorenyl and higher delocalized systems were excluded deliberately and are only mentioned occasionally for comparison).
