Rational design of a well-defined soluble calcium hydride complex.

A surprisingly simple approach gave a mol. calcium hydride. Reaction of a calcium amide, (DIPP-nacnac)Ca(N(SiMe3)2)(THF) (DIPP-nacnac = (2,6-iPr2C6H3)NC(Me)CHC(Me)N(2,6-iPr2C6H3)) with phenylsilane gives clean conversion into the hydride, [Ca2(DIPP-nacnac)2H2(THF)2] (7), that crystallizes as a dimer. [Ca2(NiPr2)2(L)2] (4, L = 9-trimethylsilylfluorenyl) and [Ca(TptBu)2] (5, TptBu = hydrotris(3-tert-butylpyrazolyl)borate) were also prepd. and 4, 5 and 7 were characterized by x-ray crystallog.
