Volatile species of Si, V, As, Br, Sn, Sb, Te, I, Hg, Pb, and Bi were detected in gases released from domestic waste deposits, using ICP MS. By concurrent aspiration of a multielement std. soln. for calibration, element concns. in deposit gas were 0.1 ng/m3 to 10 mg/m3 gas. The global amt. of some metal species emitted by this process may be of the order of several tons/yr. These results suggest a biogeochem. pathway for the transfer of metals into the atm. via volatile species. This process may have significant influence on atm. cycling of metals as well as on metal toxicity within ecosystems.
