Stable carbon and sulfur isotope distributions of crude oil and source rock constituents from Burgan and Raudhatain oil fields (Kuwait).
Seven crude oils and 10 possible source rocks from Kuwait are investigated for the stable C and S isotopic compns. of chromatog. oil and ext. fractions, asphaltenes, kerogen, carbonates, and S-bearing minerals. The crudes are isotopically very similar and suggest a single org. source. They also show characteristic intermol. isotopic distribution patterns. On the basis of the criteria: org. richness, C and S isotopic similarities of oils, exts., pyrite and kerogen, samples from the Ratawi Formation (Raudhtain oil field) and the Minagish Formation (Burgan oil field) showed indications of source potential. The excellent isotropic correlations with the sample from the Mauddud Formation (Raudhatian oil field) are explained by impregnation of rock samples by reservoir oil. On the core samples, an increase in the org. matter content is correlated with 13C enrichment in the carbonates. The results demonstrate the potential of stable C and S isotope correlation methods in geochem. hydrocarbon exploration.
