Fast determination of grain structures in steels by laser-induced optical emission spectrometry.
Areas in steels which are inhomogeneous in terms of their compns. normally have neg. changed mech. properties leading to damages during reforming and defects in the products. For the characterization of cleanness regarding to non-metallic inclusions in steel samples, the application of scanning laser-induced optical emission spectrometry (Laser OES) is tested. Therefore, a synthetic sample made from pins of different high grade steels embedded in pure iron as well as low and high alloy steel samples with segregations and banded structures were examd. The inhomogeneity of such areas could be visualized successfully for different elements (Mn, Cu, Cr, S, P, C etc.).
