Influence of polar solvents on the product distribution in the hydroformylation of 1-hexene with cobalt carbonyl catalysts.

Whereas nonpolar solvents such as C7H16 or cyclohexane did not affect the ratio of n- to iso-products formed from hex-1-ene by Co2(CO)8-catalyzed hydroformylation at a synthesis gas (1:1 H:CO) pressure of 100 bar and at 373 K, polar solvents such as DMF, MeOH, or MeCN favored an increased formation of the iso products, the extent of which increased with increased solvent Lewis basicity. The effect is discussed in relation to to the stabilization of intermediate cationic complexes.
