The group-transfer polymn. of Me methacrylate in MeCN with [(methoxymethylpropenyl)oxy]trimethylsilane as initiator and Et4N+CN- as catalyst was accompanied by a severe termination reaction of both the initiator and the active chains with the solvent leading to trimethylsilylacetonitrile and Me isobutyrate or inactive polymer. Therefore, in order to work under reaction conditions characteristic for a living system MeCN as solvent must be avoided.
