Significance of pictorial symbols for the formation of theories in education in chemistry.

The example of a lead battery was used to study the suitability of various pictorial symbols for cognitive and learning processes in electrochem. teaching. In a test with students, pictorial symbols of a lead battery, model, network and schematic pictures, chem. equations, and a text are presented. The students remembered the text better than the pictorial symbols, the relations within the network levels better than between them, and the facts at the beginning of the text better than the facts at the end.
