In order to measure temperature, a min/max thermometer is commonly used to record the daily high and low temperatures. There is currently an ongoing GLOBE Program which enables K-12 students to take global science measurements themselves. This data is entered into a system (using the Web) and the data is used by scientists in their global science research. Currently there are 66 countries participating.
